I’d be weary with this advice, or at least with this choice of wording. It almost sounds like you’re saying it’s the developer’s fault for having to work overtime. Any employer that makes you feel that way is eventually going to be toxic for your mental well-being.

If you break something, sure, you have to take accountability and fix it before it affects others. If you grossly underestimate something then realize that fact too late, you might be obliged to burn the midnight oil to make up the difference.

Another reason to work late is that sometimes, you just can’t step away from a problem because you’re obsessed.

Other than the above, oftentimes it’s the management or leadership who are “not doing their job right”…making their subordinates work overtime to compensate for their own lapses in judgment.
