As someone with deceivingly white skin and a white name, most people in the workplace couldn’t tell I’m genetically half-Filipino, let alone know that I grew up entirely in a 100% Filipino household. Our people are stereotypically maids, nannies, nurses or work in fast-food service - not that there’s a problem with honest, hard work - but it saddens me there aren’t many of us in my professional industry. Once I was told by a white man than the Philippines has “good whores” in response to my race-reveal (thankfully not in the workplace).

If it’s any consolation at all, the superficiality of my whiteness hasn’t offered me much in terms of free passes. I’ve worked insanely - almost inhumanly - hard for my career, and it took to almost age 40 to earn what many people are making in my industry in their early 20’s. My industry is engineering-focused, so colour doesn’t offer much in discrimination where results can be measured very scientifically.

I’m saddened to hear about the injustices of your story, though you have my support, FWIW.
