Top lessons learned from working with a 10x developer

Developers with 10 times the productivity — Lately, I’ve seen a lot of answers to online questions about the fabled 10x developer. Some people want to be them, others want to stay far away from them. Does the myth, the legend, live up to its name, or is it just a relative perception? Before we get into…

Why ChatGPT is not taking my Programming job

And it probably isn’t taking yours, either — The topic of this article is partially inspired by the article Software Engineers are in Denial About ChatGPT by Derek Cardwell, but mostly based on a recent experience. TL;DR for the impatient Read, understand, and achieve. You can take shortcuts to success, but competence yields better job security. Competence is never gained for free. Expectations …

What AI Thinks of SOLID Principles

Asking ChatGPT about well-established programming concepts — Introduction My first encounter with ChatGPT (the latest trending Artificial Intelligence from OpenAI) was a very different experience; it was focused on a controversial topic of how society may view a certain mode of transportation. This time, I wanted to see how well the AI “understands” programming best practices. We’ve already…

What AI Thinks of Cyclists

Asking Chat GPT about bicycles and public roads — As a technology geek, I wanted to test OpenAI’s Chat GPT (the latest trending Artificial Intelligence) on a controversial topic, and see just how good it is at handling complex topics objectively. …

Cycling mistakes that held me back

I carried on as a beginner for years — It’s been over 10 years since I brought cycling into my adult life, and while I have been quite the regular throughout, I remained complacent with beginner mistakes and a rookie mindset for several years. Some of these are going to sound like common sense for a lot of people…

Code Coverage Tools Aren’t Exciting

But they really should be — Have you ever used something so amazing that could be a revolution in the way we write code, but later found that “nobody” cares? Real-time Code Coverage On a project I worked on in 2012, we were using a code coverage tool called NCrunch, which to this day I’d still consider more advanced…

How the “perfect project” nearly ruined me as a programmer

Code architecture, test infrastructure and best practices — Let’s preface this article by addressing any assumptions of what I mean by the “perfect project”. I am referring to meticulous attention to detail, but not to the point of diminishing returns; we gave the appropriate amount of care and attention to all aspects of the project. It’s been 10…

A Journey into Carbon Bike Parts

From a Clydesdale’s perspective — 0 - Introduction As a cyclist at 6'2" and 210lbs, my experience with carbon parts might be a little different than expected, as these components don’t typically have the Clydesdale or Athena body in mind at the centre of their design. Premium bike components are, to a certain extent, optimized for athletes. This…

Yes, many concepts are not easily quantifiable/mathematically provable, or if they are, would be too expensive to prove in a controlled, scientific study that could be done fairly. I also agree that is why belief systems are a driver for many cases. That said, I still offer some counter-arguments: I…

Thanks for the comment, Hajime.

Thanks for the comment, Hajime. While I agree with your statements, I wasn't making any attempt to generalize; I was referring specifically to a 10x programmer whom I previously wrote about: https://levelup.gitconnected.com/top-lessons-learned-from-working-with-a-10x-developer-51de12383e25 My advice around humility applies to everyone. However, I do think that the more adept programmers may struggle more with being humble. Being far ahead than those who they're surrounded by - whether by experience or by natural talent, but especially the latter - will test one's patience with others.
